Ensemble Amsterdam Sinfonietta, led by violinist Candida Thompson, plays the world premiere of the piece 'Nachtmuziek' (night music) by Dutch composer Mathilde Wantenaar. The concert takes place in concert hall TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht and is part of the series AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert.

'Nachtmuziek' is an ode to Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, written by the Dutch composer Mathilde Wantenaar. It's an adaptation of an octet she wrote in 2017. The version for strings has several hight notes that float in the air like dust, ready to fall on the ground.

Violin virtuoso Biber was responsible for many big changes in violin play and music. His works are full of freedom, bravery and expression. His ‘Battalia à 10’ (battalia is Italian for ‘fight’) is a musical imitation of the war, inspired by folk music. The piece asks for extreme expression and marvellous techniques.

Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence - Amsterdam Sinfonietta / Candida Thompson - Live Concert HD


Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his String Sextet ‘Souvenir de Florence’ in the summer of 1890. He dedicated the work to the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society, right after he became Honorary Member. One of the movements of the piece was written while Tchaikovsky resided in Florence - hence the title of the work. It has been arranged for string orchestra and ensemble Amsterdam Sinfonietta performed it Sunday the 17th of February in Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
